Interview with Scott Tracey, author of Witch Eyes and Giveaway

In Witch Eyes, Braden’s gift to see through spells and lies is both a gift and a painful burden. Can you describe an instance where having this gift would be the most terrifying and conversely, when it comes in the most handy?

Taking a shower with sunglasses, and keeping them from falling off, was a struggle....People did really nasty things in the bathroom, things that could scar an innocent boy like me.

Our eyes met, and I saw through him. Trey unraveled in front of me, layers upon layers that peeled away like petals falling off a rose. I saw how deep loyalty ran within him, silver and gold threads that kept all the other parts together. I saw reflections and memories against diamond walls, decayed flowers that had been trampled underfoot, and icy winds of sarcasm that surrounded the core, the dark parts even he couldn’t see.

What are your favorite types of scenes to write (action, romance, etc) and can you share with us an example of one from your book?

“Hackers reference,” Drew supplied. “Angelina played this hot teenage hacker badass schoolgirl chick.”
“Didn’t we talk about you being offensive?” Riley said, actually sounding caustic for once.
“I could try harder, right?”

On your blog, you write about how 2011 is the “Year of the Witch”. What do you think it is about witch-themed novels that appeals to readers of Young Adult books?

Power. Greater than normal magic. Something far more severe. Deadly, but a beautiful kind of strength. I could do anything if I had that kind of power.

What is it that you love most about Braden’s character?

Had he known? Why else ask me that question? “That was the point of dinner, wasn’t it? Give Braden the magical roofie and watch him spill his guts."
“Was she wrong? My mother’s not stupid, Braden. She’s worried you might be a threat.”
“Of course I’m a threat, you idiot!”

What was the hardest aspect of building the world within your novel and how did you overcome it?

Lucien pressed another button, cutting her off. His eyes grew vacant and he glanced behind him, toward
the view over the city. “He does so enjoy unraveling my schedule.”

Which of your supporting characters would be perfect for a spin-off or novella and why?

“I’m Riley. Newspaper editor extraordinaire, fashion wunderkind, and resident expert on all things beautiful and damned.” She shook her wrist, settling the bracelets all to the bottom. “Belle? Dam? Get it?”

Lucien’s expression was inscrutable. “Your son finds himself a beau, and you invite him over for a playdate. How very modern of you.”

Demon Eyes is the second book in the series scheduled to release in 2012. Can you give us any hints or teasers as to what we can look forward to in the next installment?

“He wants the door unlocked. The door that no key should open,” I whispered.

10. On a plane: I love traveling and reading while on my way to another place is frosting on the cake. I also love peeking at what other travelers are reading.

9. At the airport: Waiting to board is boring. Good books make the time go by like nothing else.

8. In coffee houses: I love the sounds and scents of coffee houses. Reading in coffee houses is great for relaxing while still feeling the buzz of life all around you. Plus – caffeine!

7. In parks: Outside? Reading? Unless there are mosquitoes this is a win win scenario.

6. In bookstores and libraries: Browsing the shelf after shelf of books – books I love like old friends and new books that I can’t wait to tread – is one of my favorite ways to spend time

5. When dining alone: I’m out and about by myself frequently. I actually don’t mind dining alone, but having a good book along makes it even better and keeps me from attempting napkin origami.

4. In art museums: I love spending hours wandering the halls of art museums. But my feet get tired, especially in big institutions like the Met. Reading provides the perfect the break in between gazing at paintings and sculptures.

3. At my parents’ house: I grew up in a family of readers and being in a room with my mom and dad, with each of us lost in a story, is one of my favorite things about going home.

Interview with Janet Fox, Author of Forgiven & Contest!

Today I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Janet Fox, author of last year's stirring novel Faithful and the recently released novel Forgiven. Janet stopped by to discuss her book which released on June 2nd. She brought along a finished copy for one lucky winner too. See details below.

1.    Forgiven is the story of Kula baker, a young woman raised near Yellowstone by her father, an outlaw.  When Kula's father is arrested, she sets out for San Francisco determined to save his life as she searches for the contents of a mysterious box. Can you tell us more about the book and perhaps share a favorite line, scene or passage?

Kula Baker has been raised by a loving father, but more than anything she wants to live the life of a proper “lady” of the time (1906): she wants to wear fine clothes, live in a fine house, and most importantly find a rich husband. These dreams are derailed when she has to go to San Francisco; but once there she discovers the more important values of life—love, the real meaning of freedom, self-sacrifice. She also experiences the great earthquake and fires that devastated the city in April 1906.

My favorite passage is this one: “A new century lay open before us, where all things could be made clean and shiny, even a man’s soul. Why I’d heard that men could get up in the air in flying machines, men flying like birds. If that were true, why, then, anything was possible. Even possible for me, the part native daughter of an outlaw, to become a lady.”

2.    Can you elaborate on the significance of the book's title, Forgiven?

That’s an interesting question. Kula has a very tough exterior, which is a result of her upbringing and history. She carries a lot of personal baggage, and it gets in the way of her dealings with the people she cares about. She can’t forgive her mother for “abandoning” her as a baby; she can’t forgive her father for raising her in poverty; most importantly, she can’t forgive herself for the mistakes she’s made. I like to think that the novel is about learning to open your heart and forgive yourself for your personal flaws, because only then can you understand and forgive the (perceived) flaws in those around you.

3.    There is an interesting sub-plot about child slavery in San Francisco in the book which you discovered while researching the book. Can you elaborate on this topic a bit more for us?

I was horrified when I uncovered this aspect of San Francisco history. The city was born as a seaport and attracted the kinds of rough and rootless characters that inhabit any seaport; and then came the gold rush of 1849, which brought new wealth and the desire to spend it. Prostitution usually accompanies such environments. But this was not merely prostitution. Impoverished Chinese families sold their young daughters (as young as 1 year old) to merchants who shipped them across the Pacific to inhabit the bawdy houses. Most of these girls didn’t live long. They were mistreated, sometimes tortured, left to die when sick, and locked in tiny “cribs” day in and day out until they did die.

4.    What are some of your all-time favorite books? Do you think they influenced the writing of Faithful and Forgiven?

I love anything Jane Austin (all-time favorite, Pride and Prejudice), and anything Charles Dickens, and, yes, I’d say they both influence my writing. Austin’s ability to dig into human nature and represent the depth of character and the workings of the human heart is unmatched. And Dickens tells a whopping tale, while weaving complex social/moral issues of his time into his stories. I read a lot of contemporary books, too, from fantasy to dystopia, and my current favorite is The Hunger Games, which I think has epic qualities and superb characters, while still being a page-turner.

5.    Which of your supporting characters in Forgiven would be fun to do their own novella on?

Hmm. Phillipa Everts has an interesting backstory, and her history with Hannah Gale would be fun to explore. Will has a great deal of growing up to do, so his future could be the subject of its own story. And Mei Lien—I wonder what will happen to her, and to the other girls in a society that is not very tolerant of differences.

6.    Can you tell us something about yourself that most people don't know?

I once spent a month on a 20 foot wooden boat (a very primitive boat with no running water, no heat) in the fiords of Patagonia, Chile. One of the other four passengers was an American male scientist and I was assisting him in collecting rock samples. Another was a female Chilean student—they’ve since married. The other two were the Chilean men hired to run the boat. And we had on board, on the deck, three live (for a time) sheep—they were Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

I swore off meat for years, and still can’t stand the smell of mutton or sheep cheese. And a hot shower? My idea of heaven.

7.    What can we look forward to from you next? Any upcoming projects or new series in the works?

Yes—I’ve just completed a draft of another YA under contract (Moll) set in New York City in 1925. I have an option for a fourth YA and I’m hoping to reunite characters from all three YA books in Montana in the 1930s (tentative title—Paradise.) I’m also working on a middle grade fantasy.

1. This is your first book—why did you decide to write for teens?

When I think back over all the books I’ve read in my life, none have stuck with me as much as those that I read between the ages of 12 and 17.  And I mean that literally.  I still have the many of the actual books I read as a teen—not newer replacements.  I’ve taken my books everywhere with me.  They’ve been lugged up six floor walk-ups in Manhattan or stuffed into the back of my car as I spent some time driving cross-country, getting hopelessly lost while trying to find myself.  When I couldn’t afford an apartment any bigger than a broom closet, I built a loft bed and slept over my books.  (Just a tip… you might want to hire a carpenter for that one.) I write for teens because I became passionate about stories when I was one, and if I get really lucky, I might write something that someone loves enough to drag around the world.

2. Why is ancient mythology still so exciting to read about?

Myths are epic.  Heroes like Odysseus, Aeneas, and Hercules go on fabulous quests full of magic and danger, but the heroes themselves are still relatable, even today.  For example, the hero Perseus was just a teenaged guy, trying to save his mom from an evil king that was forcing her to marry him.  And he had a flying horse and chopped a lot of monster’s heads off.  Perseus in particular reminds me of a modern-day superhero, like Peter Parker or Clark Kent, and I think his story is just as exciting.  In a lot of ways myths are the original comic books; the heroes just wore togas instead of tights.

3. Who is your favorite Greek god and why?

My favorite Greek god is Dionysus.  Party animal, really into the arts.  The guy desperately needed an AA meeting, but he inspired a lot of great plays and a lot of beautiful poetry.

4. What are your favorite books to read?

My favorite books to read are fantasy or sci-fi.  It doesn’t matter what age range they are written for—adult, teens, or toddlers—I love anything that has magic, mutants, replicants, or talking animals in it.  Basically anything that has an original idea.  I like strange things, eerie concepts, and characters that are one step out of step with the world.  But no zombies.  Zombies scare the bejeezus out of me.

5. How do you get through a dark day?

“When, in disgrace with Fortune and men’s eyes/I all alone beweep my outcast state/And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries/And look upon myself and curse my fate”… and then my husband usually tells me to stop being so melodramatic, gives me a cuddle, and we go out for burgers or something.  I get down like anyone else, but as long as I have my friends and family close, I’m really easy to cheer up.  All I need is love.

Author Quickfire Questions

What’s the first thing you think of in the morning? I hope that’s a cat biting my toes.  Please, let that be a cat.

Favorite food? Lasagna.  Hands down.

Most embarrassing moment? Umm…This week?  I really couldn’t narrow it down.  I’m constantly making a fool of myself.

In the movie of your life, who would you want to play you? Angelina Jolie, of course.  But her in one of her action movie roles.  I always wanted to be an action hero and drive fast cars and dodge bullets and kick bad guys in the breadbasket.  I look absolutely nothing like the ravishing Ms. Jolie, but what the heck?  It’s all good in Hollywood.

Guilty pleasure? I’ll never tell. 

Josephine Angelini is a Massachusetts native and the youngest of eight siblings. A real-live farmer's daughter, Josie graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in theater, with a focus on the classics. She now lives in Los Angeles with her husband.
