Book Review: Prophecy of The Sisters by Michelle Zink

Prophecy of the Sisters opens during a dreary, tension filled cemetery burial for the father of the Milthorpe family in 1890's New York. Lia, Alice and Henry are burying their last remaining parent. Both their mother and father have died under mysterious circumstances. On top of that, there is a strange mark appearing on Lia's wrist, one that darkens each day. Lia begins digging into the reasons behind the mark with longtime confidant and new beau, James. Soon she uncovers a prophecy spanning centuries. One that will end with a clash of biblical proportions between her and twin sister Alice.

My favorite aspect of the book is Michelle Zink's writing style- it flows so seamlessly that I was hooked right from the beginning of this dark, Gothic filled novel. I found myself 150 pages into the book and it was like I hadn't even blinked an eye! Michelle Zink contrasts the roles and personalities of the sisters so well that it really sets the stage for the inevitable clash to follow. I loved that the story unfolded from the point of view of Lia and we are given little clues to puzzle over and try to unlock for ourselves. Lia was my favorite character and I found myself rooting for her the whole time. I felt I was standing right alongside her as she discovered elements of the prophecy. Alice, on the other hand, I was a little wary (and frightened) of right from the start! She seemed cold, distant and conniving to me. But there were moments when I saw flashes of a young girl trying to struggle against her dark nature, and I was able to care for her character as well. I must add that never knowing just what Alice might do next kept me anxiously flipping pages!

The Prophecy of The Sisters is a beautiful written, lyrically enthralling mystery that grabs you from page one and leaves you clamoring for more! There was such an ominous feel to the start of this novel, that I was immediately drawn in and couldn't put it down. This is Michelle Zink's debut novel and it's a promising start in an exciting new trilogy!

Michelle Zink lives in New York and has always been fascinated with ancient myths and legends. Never satisfied with simply reading them, she usually ends up asking, “What if?” Sometimes asking only leads to more questions, but every now and then, when everything falls into place just right, a story is born. Prophecy of the Sisters is one of those stories.
